Class Preparation (To Do BEFORE class)
Recommended Equipment and Information:
- NO CHAIN leashes, RETRACTABLE leashes or TORN and TATTERED leashes. 6 foot leather leashes are recommended for your comfort. Leather leashes are the most comfortable and can last a long time. Leather leashes should be 6 feet in length and 1/2 inch wide for small to medium sized dogs or 5/8 inch wide for large to extra-large sized dogs. (High quality leather leashes are available for purchase at Katie's K9 for $20).
- Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that are designed for movement and activity. If weather permits we will be outdoors working in a grassy area. You and your dog will be up and moving for the majority of class time. NO FLIP-FLOPS or SANDALS!
- In hot weather, bring a water bowl for your dog. Water is available.
- Anyone interested in the training is welcome to come (children must be 12yrs or older and supervised at all times by another adult NOT working with the dog)! You may split the class with another person (first half hour one person works with the dog and the second half hour the other person works with the dog). I believe in having adults and kids (12 yrs and older) involved in training the dog so you are all learning together and working as a team.
- Do not feed your dog for at least 5 hours before coming to class. It will decrease the chance of an "accident". Plus your pet can not think on a full stomach.
- Classes are rarely cancelled. If there are extreme weather conditions and class is cancelled or rescheduled you will receive a phone call prior to class.
Upon Your Arrival and During Class
- ALWAYS HAVE YOUR DOG ON A LEASH (and a training collar if you have one). Especially BEFORE you let them out of the car.
- Do not let your dog "Sniff" any other dog. This is your first step to obedience training. You are to be in control and the dog your dog is "sniffing" may not be as friendly as yours.
- Make a mental note of any other students having a hard time with their dogs and stay clear of them until the handler regains control.
- All children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
- I DO NOT USE TREATS! I want your dog to learn to respect you and obey you from their heart — not their stomach.
My classes are geared for the everyday dog to become a good citizen and to respond to you the first time. I use lots of verbal and physical praise along with all the humor I can muster from you. You need to think of it as: your dog knows Spanish and you know English. You need to learn a little Spanish and your pet needs to learn a little English. Together we can create a great working team!
Classes meet at the same time each week - PLEASE BE ON TIME! (Puppy classes are 2 weeks, Beginner I and II classes are 5 weeks, Quickie Classes meet only once). Bring your dog with you every week. At the conclusion of each class you will receive handouts highlighting the training you have done with your dog. You don't have to memorize everything or take a lot of notes! Plus, each week there will be time for your questions.
